What are the steps to install drainage around your house in Calgary?

Locate places where your lawn is retaining too much water, with water standing on the soil for more than an hour after a rain.

1. Monitor and walk through around your house during the rain storm and after the rain storm:

This is number one step to eliminate any future basement flooding due to yard drainage, in this step you will locate the places to where your grass / lawn is retaining too much water. Standing water on the grass is a dangerous and a big sign of there is water issue at your yard, if this standing water did not soak into the ground after one hour of rain fall then a drainage solution is required.

2.  Identify the dry drainage spots of your future drainage system solution

For every wet area, locate the lower spot of the yard and mark it with a rock or fly ( I am sure you can find small rocks around your Calgary landscaped yard, Or if your yard have no rocks; a sprinkler system flag from winterization / winter blow out comes in handy or even wood sticks would work)  this will help you plan the drainage system of your landscaping project. This location should be away from the house to eliminate any water going to the basement and NEVER place the end of the drainage system between houses as water may flow to your neighbour yard and can cause future issues therefore, we at A Green Future recommend placing the end of the drainage solution system to   be at a  lower elevation than the standing water location.

3. Remove the Grass from the location and place it on the side for future use

Depending on the location, this location could be a lawn area where you would need to remove the grass and then can be placed back once the drainage solution system project is complete, or this could be a gravel area ( a low maintenance yard) you also would need to place the gravel on the side to check the slope under the gravel and this can be used back in place at the end.

Once grass is placed on the side, dig at the drainage location a drywall of size 2 feet wide x 3 feet deep and haul the soil and wet clay out of your yard as this will be replaced with drainage gravel.

4. Form a Trench / french drain to solve the drainage problem:

Excavate a trench of 1 foot wide and approximately 10 inches deep depending on the slope of your yard, trenching in Calgary must be in a slope, A Green Future drainage experts recommend every 1 foot of trench to have a slope of 1/8 inch which will be sufficient to allow water escape and flow away from he wet drainage problem at your Calgary landscaping yard which means for every 4 feet you would have a slope of half inch, a four foot level comes in handing as the trench is being in progress.
This means wherever there is grass in the trench location needs to be cut out and placed on the side, and all the clay/soil needs to be taken away from the location.

5. How to check the slope of the drainage trench / french drain:

This is the most important part of all the drainage solution, after all the hard work now its time to test the slope of the drainage trench, simply get a 4 foot level and check the slope of the trench, and adjust the trench depth when necessary, the slope we recommend is to be half inch for every 4 linear feet.
You may also check with the tape measure; by measuring the depth of the trench every 4 feet and confirming  there is a half inch slope for every 4 feet.
( Important Note: Depends on the severity of the drainage issue, this is on a case by case scenario, to help the water run faster away from the house or foundation  you may increase the slope of the trench by double which means for every four linear feet of trench to have a 1 inch slope, this would require more digging  and double the clay/soil cubic yards but it is recommended if there is more than one source of water leading to the wet drainage problem at your Calgary landscaped yard.

6. Landscaping fabric and galvanized nails

Once trench is complete, and confirmed the slope of the trench, place landscaping fabric inside the trench, and the main goal is to keep the soil out of the trench as this will be where the water will be running inside the trench.
Hold the landscaping fabric with galvanized U nails to make it easy for you in the next steps of solving the drainage solution with drainage system

7. Drainage gravel inside the drainage trench:

Keep in mind, the trench digging is the key and most important factor in this drainage solution system, if there is no slope then the water will sit inside the pipe and may cause freezing in the winter times with our Calgary weather.
Now place a 1-2 inches of gravel layer on the bottom of the trench.

8. Place 4 inch drainage pipe inside the french drain trench:

Place perforated drainage pipe inside the trench and be above the first 2 inches of the gravel, this perforated drainage pipe would be a 4 inch diameter.

9. Add more gravel and landscaping fabric inside the drainage system:

Then place 2-3 inches of gravel on the top of the perforated drainage pipe.
Important to place fabric on the top of the gravel to eliminate any soil going into the drainage system and clog the system

10. Place the soil back for your grass :

Once the fabric in place then place 2-3 inches of the soil back and compact it

11. Place the grass back in place:

Finally you may place the grass back in place.
